The 2021 drought was a stressor to crops. Fortunately, the very best seed, seed treatments, crop protection products and agronomic practices helped corn and soybeans survive until rain arrived.

The wet conditions last fall drug out harvest and made it somewhat difficult to find locations for the 2020 FIRST plots, according to Luke Brendemuhl, manager of the Red River Valley Northland FIRST region. But thanks to completely different conditions this fall allowing harvesting operations to be completed, all of the FIRST (Farmers Independent Research of Seed Technologies) plot information is now available on the website for the region.

As corn and soybean production moves north, companies recognize the value of FIRST trial results. Updates are provided on many seeds companies that are participating in FIRST corn trials throughout Southeast North Dakota, and in soybean trials clear to the border with Canada.

Corn seed test results for the Red River Valley are being offered this fall from F.I.R.S.T. and Mark Tollefson, the F.I.R.S.T. corn manager for northwest Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, noted that harvest is approaching quickly in 2012.
