Pop Ups
|
|
|
"Pop-Up" is simply a
term that means the
web site is trying
to show you
something in a new
window of your
browser.
The term gained a
negative connotation
when web site
developers used the
ability to open
things in new
windows as a way to
have mini-windows
"pop up" with
annoying
advertising.
However, the ability
to open files in a
new window
separately from the
one you're viewing
has many advantages
if used properly.
These advantages
include:
-
You can click on
something (such
as a PDF file),
and if it opens
in a new window
you can close it
WITHOUT closing
the web site.
-
You can have
more than one
pop-up window
open at a time,
and thus be able
to view more
than one report
at a time.

There are only two
ways that a Pop-Up
can be blocked:
by the browser
itself or by
individually loaded
pop-up blocker
software. We
can only address
browsers blocking
pop-ups here, so if
you've installed
pop-blocker
software, and need
to know how to turn
it off for specific
web sites, you'll
have to contact the
company that makes
the software you're
using.
Here's how to work
with pop-up blocking
in different
browsers:

|
|
If
you're
using
Internet
Explorer
(up to
Version
7), and
you try
to click
on
something
that's
set to
open in
a new
window,
you'll
see the
following:

Note
that you
can
choose
to see
additional
options,
and so
you'll
need to
click
your
mouse
where it
says to
"click
here".
When you
do, a
menu
will
open,
and you
can
choose
to allow
your
browser
to
always
show you
pop-ups
from the
F.I.R.S.T
Seed
Tests
web
site:

In
Internet
Explorer,
you can
also
change
your
Pop-Up
Blocker
settings
to apply
to ALL
the
sites
you
visit.
You
access
this
from the
"Tools"
menu,
and if
you
click on
"Tools",
you'll
see
"Pop-Up
Blocker"
in the
menu: |

Like Internet
Explorer,
Firefox
also
blocks
Pop-Ups
automagically
and lets
you know
that
it's
done so.
UNLIKE
Explorer
though,
it
doesn't
tell you
what to
do if
you want
to see
the item
you've
clicked
on:

Firefox
makes
you look
ALLLLLLLL
the way
over to
the far
right
side of
the
browser
(which
can be
easily
overlooked
if you
have a
wide-screen
monitor),
to find
their
"Options"
box.
Once you
click on
"Options"
though,
the full
Pop-Up
menu
will
open,
allowing
you to
set your
options
any way
that you
wish:

The
Sarari
browser
installs
with
Pop-Ups
turned
OFF, and
it
doesn't
give you
a choice
(or even
notify
you!)
that
they're
blocked.
Safari
also
doesn't
allow
you to
set
pop-ups
by web
site,
but only
to "On"
or
"Off",
which is
why
Safari
is
considered
by some
to be
the
worst of
all
browsers
at
handling
pop-ups.
The
choice
is
accessed
through
the
"Edit"
menu:

Chrome (Currently
in Beta -
This info
could change
in final
release): |
|
While
other
browsers
note a
blocked
pop-up
via a
bar at
the top,
Chrome
shows
the
pop-ups
as a bar
at the
bottom
of the
screen.

If
you're
using
Chrome,
and want
to see a
blocked
pop-up,
simply
pull
that
window/bar
up to
the
middle
of your
screen
using
your
mouse.
You can
then
close
the
window
or
resize
it:
